In 2020 the live casino specialist Evolution Gaming dropped the second word of its name and became simply Evolution. The change landed in the same year the group agreed to buy NetEnt, and it marked a company that no longer saw itself as just a live dealer studio.
What changed with the rebrand
- The brand name: “Evolution” replaced “Evolution Gaming” in the company’s communication with partners and on the platforms that carry its games.
- The legal name: renaming the group company was a separate, formal step. The board put the proposal to shareholders at the 2020 Annual General Meeting.
- The logo: the recognisable leaf-shaped mark stayed, redrawn with a bolder and more confident look.
Why drop the word “Gaming”?
The company’s reasoning was that the old name had become too narrow. Its work already went beyond supplying online games: it was developing software and technology and designing dedicated live casino studios for its partners. One word described that wider business better.
The risk of confusion was small. Operators and players already called the brand “Evolution”, so recognition carried over without effort.
A name that matches its role in live casino
The name also points to the company’s track record. Before Evolution’s first live casino games, streamed dealer tables were far less engaging and looked little like the casino floors of Las Vegas or Macau. Its studios raised the bar for production quality and helped turn live dealer games into a core part of the online casino lobby. Staying the number one name in that segment has been central to its strategy ever since.
Growing beyond live dealer games
2020 was also the year Evolution agreed to acquire NetEnt, in a deal reported at around £1.6 billion. NetEnt brought one of the best-known slot catalogues in the industry, plus Red Tiger, which it already owned. Big Time Gaming joined the group later. Together, these deals turned a live casino specialist into a supplier of both live and RNG content, and the shorter name suits that broader portfolio.
What it means for operators
For casinos, the rebrand changed nothing in day-to-day terms: the same games, studios and integrations continued under the new name. What matters more today is the breadth of the group’s content, from live tables and game shows to slots. Our Evolution provider profile covers the portfolio in detail, and Evolution tables are part of our live casino bundle, available through one API.
