Croupier explained: who runs the gaming table

A croupier is the casino employee who runs a gaming table. The word is French and is most closely linked with roulette and baccarat, while English speakers often say dealer, especially at card games. Many consider croupier the more accurate word, because the job goes well beyond dealing cards or spinning a wheel.

A croupier checks the cards and equipment before play, makes sure every bet is placed before the round starts and closes betting at the right moment. They collect losing chips, pay winners at the correct odds and exchange players’ cash for chips. They also answer questions about the rules and house policies, and keep the table moving at a steady pace.
