Sportsbook Bonus Types Explained: From Free Bets to Cashback

Free bet, cash bonus or money back? Bookmakers use incentives to win new customers and to keep existing ones betting, and each type behaves differently once the terms are applied. This guide breaks down the eight bonus formats you will find on most sportsbooks and what an operator should think about before switching each one on.

Why sportsbook bonuses work differently

Betting incentives are not the same as casino bonuses. They are tied to odds, events and settlement rules, so the value depends on details such as minimum odds and how a stake is returned. A look at any group of bookmakers shows the same building blocks again and again: a gift for the first top-up, a doubled deposit, a free bet on sign-up and so on. Each brand chooses the mix that suits its audience or designs its own twist.

The eight formats covered below are:

  1. first deposit bonus;
  2. cash bonus;
  3. free bet;
  4. money back;
  5. no deposit bonus;
  6. special event bonuses;
  7. other promotions;
  8. individual bonuses.

1. First deposit bonus

The customer opens an account, funds it for the first time and receives extra money. The bookmaker can grant it with no strings attached, but most attach rules, and wagering requirements are the most common: deposit and bonus must be bet a set number of times before the balance can be withdrawn.

Two other conditions matter just as much: the minimum odds that qualifying bets must meet and the date when the bonus expires. Because a first deposit offer can match or even double the deposit, it is one of the most sought-after incentives in online betting.

2. Cash bonus

A cash bonus is money paid to the player when certain conditions are met. Here is a typical example:

  • the player deposits €70;
  • the bookmaker adds a 100% cash bonus, another €70;
  • the account now shows €140, but the bonus part cannot be withdrawn straight away.

To release it, the player must bet the bonus amount several times, with the multiple set by the bookmaker. A threefold requirement could be met with three bets equal to the bonus, or one bet three times its size. A minimum odds rule, also called a minimum coefficient, often applies on top.

3. Free bet

A free bet is a stake credited to the player for betting only. It is usually smaller than a cash bonus and is not real money. If the bet wins, the player keeps the winnings without the stake; if it loses, the player loses nothing. Bookmakers often add conditions such as wagering on the winnings. Our dedicated guide to the free bet bonus goes deeper.

4. Money back

Money back, or a refund, returns the stake when a qualifying bet loses. The operator decides which bets qualify: a specific market, for example, or a certain event happening during the match. Players like it because it removes the risk from their first bet, and if the result disappoints they still get the stake back. As always, the terms decide what the offer is actually worth.

5. No deposit bonus

This bonus is credited simply for registering, before any money is deposited. It lets newcomers try the betting markets and compare odds without risking their own funds, and winnings become withdrawable once the requirements are cleared. For operators, it is the offer most exposed to abuse, which is why genuine no deposit deals are rare and usually come with strict limits.

6. Special event bonuses

These are offers built around a particular occasion, such as a major tournament, a derby or a seasonal event. They come in many shapes and are an effective way to grab attention when interest in sport peaks.

7. Other promotions

Everything that does not fit the categories above lands here. Common examples are boosts on accumulator (express) bets, loyalty programmes and payouts linked to unusual match outcomes.

8. Individual bonuses

Personal offers target regular customers who have stopped betting. Because the deal is better than the standard promotions, it gives the bookmaker a strong reason for a lapsed player to come back.

Setting up bonuses on your sportsbook

Used well, these eight tools cover the whole customer journey, from the first deposit to win-back. The key is control over the rules: wagering multiples, minimum odds, expiry dates, eligible markets and abuse checks. Our standalone bonus system and the bonus and loyalty module let you configure these conditions, and our sportsbook solution brings the betting side together in one platform.
